Semi-Truck Lateral Dynamic Behavior Simulation

Past Project (2018-2019) P.I. Dr. Mehdi Ahmadian

This project investigates the lateral stability and manoeuvrability in a long combintaion vehicles using TruckSim software. The simulation results indicate that trucks with thriple trailers exhibit a larger reaward amplification, higher likelihood of rollovers. However, 33-ft lenght double trailer exhibit better lateral stability than the 28-ft double trailer

Trailer types for simulation: 28-ft double trailers, 33-ft double trailers, and 28-ft triple trailers

We have put pay-load in the truck trailer and use Solidworks CAD software to generate the center-of-mass and moment of inertia

28-ft drop-frame trailer CAD and corresponding parameters
33-ft drop-frame trailer CAD and corresponding parameters

Driving Maneuvers are J-turn and Double Lane Change

J-turn (Left) and Double Lane Change (Right) Manuever

Simulation results are close to the real experiment results

According to the simulation results, we find that 33-ft double trailer truck achieve better lateral stability than the 28-ft double trailer and 28-ft triple trailer trucks
